One of the quintessential experiences when traveling through Thailand is a full moon party in Koh Phangan (or a half moon party if it fits your itinerary better). Under the light shinning off of the full moon Sunrise beach becomes a giant beach party with loud music, bright colours, and buckets of booze as far as the eye can see.
To prepare for the full moon party is simple, just cover yourself in neon paint and brightly coloured clothing. Once the proper dresscode had been obtained find your way to the southeast end of Koh Phangan where the beach will be buzzing with bodies before the sun even sets.
Alistair and I arrived at the party later in evening and quickly sought out some bright coloured body paint. We found a quieter area of beach and had a quick beer infused body painting session – arms, legs, face, and feet – before joining the festivities on the main beach.
The beach was packed full of bodies and lined with bars that were blasting music from their makeshift stages. Just in front of these stages was a long line of stands that were selling buckets – a full moon party favorite.
Small sand pails were on display with various bottled contents (each bucket contained a mickey of liquor, a soda, and an energy drink) and after selecting your preferred combination your bucket was filled with ice, all three ingredients, and a few straws. Along the ends of the beach, where the crowd thinned out a bit, there were other stalls selling food and snacks as well as temporary tattoos in the same neon paints that glowed under the black lights.
After hours of dancing around on the beach our evening eventually dwindled down and we made the bumpy taxi ride back to our bungalow. The full moon party was a lot of fun (despite the hangover that followed) and although the hype may have been bigger than the evening itself I still recommend it as an essential Thailand experience.
